The Purple Room Students only have class for 1 day, but many are making progress towards their projects.
6th graders: "choosing their own topic and creating a Text Adventure", using Google Slides or MSPowerPoint 7th & 8th graders: creating commercials to advertise a product, service or item, using MSPowerPoint or Google Slides and then converting it to a video using Animoto. This week the students in Blue Room are continuing to work on their "unstructured" presentations. Students can pick a topic from something they want to research and talk about. Most students are continuing to work their projects. They are few who are finished and will be presenting next Wednesday. Their topics so far are the following:
Anthropology Al Capone Dungeon and Dragons The TESS Satellite Precious gems Studio Ghibli The Brain and How it Works Portal Glow in the Dark The Great Extraordinary Science Experiments This week the students used Computer Lab time to CONTINUE to work on their Fake books. Also this week the students were given additional computer lab time to work on their Civil War Project for Bina. On Wednesday, the students are getting to use time to create their own Google Slide, Drawing or any Google App of their choice about a topic he/she wants to work on. Some students chose to work on their Python projects.
This week the students used Computer Lab time to work on their Fake books as well as their Civil War Projects (Their outlines are due on Wednesday, 4/25/18 to Bina) So for the Fakebooks, students have chosen MILITARY characters such as , Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, SPIES: Betty Duvall, Sara Emma Evelyn Edmundson (Edmonds) Seelye, Maria Belle Boyd, Mary Walker, Pauline Cushman, and MILITARY MEDIC: John Samuel Apperson ( Confederate) and we discovered one of his wives was buried in Blacksburg which was a very interesting.
The Blue Room students only met for one day this week. This week students continued to research their Civil War character using a "FAKE BOOk" . This research encourages students to find information about a Civil War character who was impacted or possible changed some event during this War. (Blue Room students are learning about the Civil War during their social studies unit with Bina). I will let you know more about the characters and share their Fake books with you here.
This week the Blue Roomers started a new project -it is called a "Fake Book" of a character from the Civil War. Students are going to use template similar to Facebook and put research information about their chosen Civil War character. The character could be a spy, soldier, sailor, an activist, a civilian, a military figure, or religious figure who took part in the Civil War. This is a research project where students can discover more information using critical thinking to put this information into a template similar to Facebook.
This week the Blue Room students finished their newsletters and printed them. Many of the students found formatting text into two-columns require patience. Students inserted images, dates and their by lines into their individual newsletters. While most find typing about the social injustices in American and around the world sometimes sad; many wrote passionately about their topic. Many came up with "clever" newsletter titles. Again their topics were about Social Injustices with the Environment, Political, Refugees and Gender Related issues.
The Blue Room students are continuing to work on their Newsletters. While some have finished, many are still finding Good Examples of social injustices all over the world. Also, students took their first timed writing as a baseline or their goal on their final end-of-the year typing test.
Students also learned about ADD-ONS and added a free Add on called Easy Bib which creates a bibliography for a Google Doc in a pre-formatted text. They thought it was pretty cool. This week the Blue Room students started to use Google Docs and create a newsletter about a topic of social injustice. This is a project to align with the Blue Room's History discussion of Slavery. So far many students are writing their newsletter about Environmental Issues. Also, some are discussing social injustices such as refugees, political, gender issues, education, and religion. Students will be designing their own newsletter title and formatting paragraphs using columns.
